Living in the light...

I've been memorizing scripture as my monthly experiment this month. It's been full and timely... I've been committing 1 John chapter 1 to memory, and hoping to add chapters from there... it'd be cool to do a whole book. Anyway, I love it. AND it's neat the way God times things out or invades our time (depends on whose angle you look from I suppose)... anyway, I'm struck by this verse today, "This is the message God has given us to announce to you, God is light, there is no darnkness in Him AT ALL. So, we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in Spiritual darkness. But if we are living in the light of God's presence, as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His son, cleanses us from every sin."

The thing that struck me is that spiritual darkness leads to isolation. And spiritual LIGHT leads to community. If we live in the light of God the first fruits of it is that we will have fellowship with each other. Isn't that the story of the prodigal son... and the reverse in the garden of Eden.. the cost of darkness is that we lose each other. But the beauty of light - what a celebration, we find each other!
Let's live in the light.

your thoughts brought this old hymn from childhood to mind

Walk in the light: so shalt thou know
That fellowship of love
His Spirit only can bestow
Who reigns in light above.

Walk in the light: and sin abhorred
Shall ne’er defile again;
The blood of Jesus Christ, thy Lord,
Shall cleanse from every stain.

Walk in the light: and thou shalt find
Thy heart made truly His
Who dwells in cloudless light enshrined
In Whom no darkness is.

Walk in the light: and thou shalt own
Thy darkness passed away,
Because that light hath on thee shone
In which is perfect day.

Walk in the light: and e’en the tomb
No fearful shade shall wear;
Glory shall chase away its gloom,
For Christ has conquered there.

Walk in the light: and thine shall be
A path, though thorny, bright;
For God, by grace, shall dwell in thee,
And God Himself is light.

I can' think of a better chapter to memorise. 1 John is right up there in the top 10 along with Romans 8, Romans 12, Epehsians 2, Psalm 51, Psalm 46, Revelation 21 etc.

I've probably read 1 John 1 more than any other chapter of scripture.

Enjoy!

That's cool. When I worked at THQ many years ago, Commissioner Ed Read encouraged me to memorize Scripture and that's the chapter he suggested that I start with. You've inspired me to get back at it. Where are you? Cathie
